Shoveling Safety:
Shoveling can be strenuous work. In fact, some exercise experts say that shoveling heavy snow requires as much energy as running at a speed of 9 miles per hour! So when the time comes be prepared with these helpful hints:
- Dress in layers: a wool sweater or vest can help to maintain core temperature, a scarf over your nose and mouth to avoid breathing cold air and a hat to retain body heat.
- Don't eat or smoke before shoveling snow and try to avoid caffeinated beverages. All of these products are stimulants and may increase your heart rate and cause blood vessels to constrict.
- Pace yourself, take frequent rest breaks and drink plenty of water.
- Shovel safely by bending your legs slightly at the knees, letting your thigh muscles do most of the pushing and lifting work; this will reduce the amount of strain of your heart and back. Use a shovel with a small scoop and keep loads light and small.
- Don't let shoveling be your first form of exercise this year. Be sure to spend a few weeks training. Focus on aerobic exercise as well as core strength.
